I have 1979 ford bronco that I put a 79' 460 in, but it has a big bogging problem an I cant get answers any were im hopeing someone her can help. It will run fine for about 2 minutes and then start bogging and loses all of its power at that time I knew it was out oime and needed a timeing chain so I put a new timeing chain in thinking that would fix it but it did nothing I checked the plugs, wires, distributor, rotor, and ignition coil, all were fine then I checked the fuel pressure and it was low so I changed the fuel pump and it ran grate for a day I thought I fixed it but it started bogging again now im thinking carburator problems it has a carter afb carburator on it. Someone told me to clean the fuel tank and the lines change the filters and clean the carborator and that should do it but if that was the case shouldn't it be running like crap all time not just after 2 or 3 minutes then I thought can it be vapor locking the fuel line is running about 6" away from the exhaust manifold and it is a steel line dose anyone have any other ideas I would really appreciate it.
Sounds like a fuel starvation issue.A bad filter would probably let the engine idle and start cutting out as speed increases.Could be bad or old gas but only you would know that.Has the truck been sitting for any lenth of time?Could the gas have been contaminated.Don't know much about Carter carbs,(I've only run Holleys)but it could be a bad accelerator pump, leaking float or a stuck needle/seat assembly.Time for carb rebuild/replacement?Could even be a bad fuel pump.Need more descriptive info. How long has this been happening?Runs for 2 mins, reving, idling or driving?
I chaged the fuel pump and it made it run good for about a day but then I started bogging again it only sat for about a month but that's because of the same problem it was just recently I change the fuel pump in it and it ran great for a while, I was driving it around but once it got to operating temperature it started bogging out again and now I can hardly get it started but when I do I don't even have to wait for to get to operating temperature for to start bogging out again it just sputters and eventually dies oh and by the way the day I change the fuel pump I could get it to operating temperature without any problems what so ever it was the day after it started bogging at operating temperature thanks.
If you don't have access to a another carb(one that is from a good running vehicle)then it might be worth it to remove and inspect the one you have.Start it up,let it run and after it sputters and dies, check the fuel bowls to see if they have fuel.If there is fuel, check the level of the floats. You might also want to insulate the fuel line that passes near any heat source.Check the fuel line from the tank to the pump for kinks. You can take a length of rubber fuel line, slice it down the middle and slide it over the steel line for insulation.I think the design of the Carter carbs makes them less prone to vapor lock.Holleys, with the outer fuel bowls, are more likely to get vapor lock.I insulate all my fuel lines that are near headers or exhaust.I even insulate the line from the pump to carb.I doubt the fuel is bad.Start with the easy things first and eliminate parts as the culprits. My guess is carb related.
