I didn't really think about it, until The crank needing replaced(not a big deal)
and the price of gas!(#2 kind of a bad deal) and I just want a run EFI and the
Mustang stuff is nicer looking than the truck units. also there are a lot more choices in the aftermarket world for the 5.0. But mainly fuel. I can also run mass air if I choose to. So now I got a little homework to do on the EFI but shouldn't be bad. I will have to find the EFI stuff. The explorer motor is distributorless ignition. AH THE FUN NEVER ENDS!!!

Jeff- Glad to hear you got what you wanted. Hey man, it's all good. Its your ride, you should have what you want. The good news is that you shouldn't have any trouble selling that 351W core and even making a few bucks. Lookin forward to seeing your progress with the 5.0!

Yeah i know. Scabbing... I probably made it sound worse than it really is. It is certainly not what i normally do, that's for sure. A couple years ago I dropped $2800 on a 460 for my SCab got all the 'good' stuff as I wanted reliability and towing power. With the 390, I know there are defects/problems, but am refusing to fix them. I probably have $400-$600 into the engine and if i were to rebuild it, it'd be an easy $2k. Economics says, spend the extra $ elsewhere on the truck, whats done to the engine will be fine. If the 390 lasts through the summer, great. If not, well, I'll cross that bridge when i get there. I'm lookin at subbing the front and at that time i may go with a 351C or 351W with an AOD. That's partly the reason for 'scabbin' the 390 together. It's got 1 odd piston, worn cam bearings, and looks like someone took an 8" angle grinder to the deck of the block. I bought it running, and kept it that way, but performing what i call a Krylon rebuild. Fresh set of gaskets, oil pump, timing set and i upgraded the cam and lifters and added the 4bbl. New water pump, fuel pump, and rebuild carb. (all posted in my build thread) I've done this exercise enough times over from my youth (being broke) that I think I'll be ok. We'll just have to wait and see!!

Dano, you sound a lot like me. I have spent some big bucks on other vehicles and I just don't enjoy them like this truck project. Trying to scrounge up parts to make it work. I hate to say it, but , for me that's the only way I can do this kinda stuff. Maybe there will be a day that will change, but don't see a light at the end of that tunnel! I don't need pretty, I need function. Pretty is nice, but if I can polish a factory aluminum bracket for free and learn from it, hooray for me.

I totally have the same train of thought as this.

I even am fortunate that I have a little money to burn on projects, but I choose to do things the "hard way" and learn as Im doing it.

I love using the projects I build and work on when they are done, but I love even more working on them and buling them!

Jeff,

Congratulations on your new engine. That engine will make for a great powerplant.

LOL! I couldn't afford the gas to start that monster! Don't they measure fuel by the pound on a motor that big? Like 500 lbs an hour?

Got my 5.0 home today. gotta see if the front stuff is interchangeable between the 351W and 302. Timing cover, brackets and such. That would make life a little easier for me. The place I got it from, took the bracketry, alt, power steering pump. I guess that will cost ya more...
