dash swap

Has anyone ever put the 87-91 (specifically 1989) dash into an 80-86 f150 I parted out a rusted out F250 4X4 so i have the complete dash, steering column, the entire hvac system as well as the entire wiring harness also the kick panels, trim etc! Basically if it was not permanently attached i have it so i am curious as to how to install it into my 84 i really dont want to use the 89 chassis harness b/c it looks like a fire hazard nor do i wish to use the engine harness b/c its set up for EFI 351 and i have a carbureted 400m. wiring is my only issue as im sure the rest will be a bolt in deal. also the dash harness original to the 84 is fried there is no fusebox just a bunch of inline fuseholders which is what prompted this adventure so any help is appriciated

Dash swap

It is not a bolt in, the 80-86 dash is a built up assembly and attaches with different bolt/screw locations. The 87-91 dash uses a different pedal bracket that will mount to the 84 firewall, but the support from the cowl down to the top of it is different. The steering column is basically the same, just different attachment bracket. The 87 up dash uses four small screws that go into plastic nut sleeves with the just left of center having an oval insert for an alignment pin.

These are pictures of the upper dash mounts from a 1990 I parted out. I was going to use the dash in mine. Hope this helps, I ended up using a 1995 dash in my 86 so I could get the later power distribution box.

dash swap plus some.

hi, I am very interested about that 95 to 86 dash swap. I am starting on a swap that includes; taking the drive train, interior, front clip, doors and whatever else it takes from a 1995 F-150 and putting it in a 1986 Bronco. I hope to run all the 95 computers and hoping for the dash. Thanks for any help. Tom

Make sure you swap the fuel tanks. Besides having the fuel injection pumps and stuff, the 87-up cluster fuel gauge will not work with a 86-dwn fuel sending unit.

Thanks a lot. I will be referring to this thread often I believe. The 1986 is a Bronco 5.0 EFI, AOD free and almost completely dismantled. The 1995 is an F-150 5.0 EFI, 4R70WE 4X4 that I just don't need. We have two others. I want a Bronco more, so I can go wheelin' with my daughter in her 1996 Bronco 5.8 XLT. Thanks again, Tom

Ok, then don't fall into the trap of swapping in the later dash without swapping the tanks or the sending units. They are both EFI, but the later dash will not work with the older sending unit. Another problem that may arise is the speedometer. I believe the 95 has a electronic speedometer with a PSOM module. The earlier dash has a cable speedo. So you will have to do some thinking about that one, your idea of not using the later wiring might not work. And you will need a speed sensor somewhere for the electronic speedo.

Thanks, I am planning on using the wiring from the f-150. I didn't know about the difference in sending units until reading it here but, as long as I use the f-150 cluster I should be good. The issue with the speedo I will have to swap in the rear end from the f-150 to get the speed sensor. I just hope they have the same gears. the both have the 8.8 dif. I am hoping that having both rigs side by side and a little help from friends like seem to be on here it is possible. Thanks again, Tom

If you had a 1987 truck or Bronco the sensor would be there, it is the rear anti-lock brake sensor.

Yeah the 95 has the sensor. Worst case I can use the 86 t/case for the speedo cable.

As far as I know, there is no cable speedometer for the 1995 dash unless some of the bigger (F600, 700 etc.) use a similar cluster with a mechanical speedometer.

I will only need the cable if I stay with the 86 cluster.

Yes, but it will not even begin to fit in the 1995 dash.

I would only use the 86 cluster if I stay with the 86 dash. It looks like pretty much all or nothing. I would probably be better off finding a newer Bronco but, this one has very little rust and it was free (nothing is ever really free).

I looked at your original post again and I don't see any purpose at all for using any parts on your 84. I didn't realize you wanted to keep the 400 engine.
