MY buddy says a chip on his v-10 has made a REMARKABLE difference in gas milage !!! My other buddy ( a ford dealer mechanic ) says these lean out your moter and shorten the life of the engine.....in a snow plow or 5 th wheeel app a super chip can melt your engine down....OPINIONS ANYONE ??
Even worse. He probably picked up one of those Ebay "performance chips". From what I understand, all they are is a resistor that gets spliced into the wire going to the MAF. It alters the MAF signal. Yes, it can make the truck run lean and yes, that will destroy an engine.
Most of the time the O2 sensor will catch the F/A ratio being out of whack and adjust to correct, so it probably is just a wasted $60 and the performance or mileage gains are just imaginary.

Both are full of it.
Off the shelf tuners usually don't change the A/F ratio at all and if they do they add a little bit of fuel. Custom tunes usually add more fuel at WOT to gain more power and help prevent detonation and high cylinder temps.
I never saw improved mpg with a tune whether off the shelf or custom tunes on my V10 however I never ran "Economy" tunes as performance was more important than mpg. With a good custom economy tune I'd say 1 mpg increase is pretty much at the max of what you could see on a V10, if that.
If you want to tune your truck get some custom tunes from a reputable dealer.
he bought some chip for 60 bucks put it by the master cylinder and spliced 2 wires into the big air intake tube TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE , PROBALY IS
Sounds like one of those old school deals that were used before flash tuners were mainstream. I wouldn't touch them, they are usually hack jobs that trick the ecm.
