I towed my 4lb camper to Medford for work recently...in which the trip was going great for about 7 hours into it..Well while on the downhill side of a pretty steep grade i selected 2nd gear to hold us to a less intense braking situation it was fine for a few minutes and suddenly it sounded like steel scraping pavement and the engine quit and lost all assist braking and steering as well as trailer braking....got it stopped, and started and driving away with no problem....however it did it again in 2nd gear this time did not kill the engine....This transmission shifts flawlessly otherwise...it has about 28,000 miles on it with no runs drips or errors otherwise...I have not called the dealership yet...it has 2 more years warranty
2nd gear drops out the torque converter lockup, the TC slips like the dickens, and it gets hot fast in that situation. I have that badge sewn into my tee shirt.

Maybe this depends on your tunes. Mines locks 2nd at times as low 15-20mph. I see it real time on my Edge CTS. Also, pushing the OD "Off" button seems to unlock the TQ converter too.

TCLU at 15-20 MPH? Uh... doesn't that make the gearing too high to maintain a running RPMs at that speed, or are we talking seriously low gear ratio in the rear?

Temp gauge was reading below 140...but...some of the steep, winding roads are unmanageable at speeds high enough to maintain lockup without heavy braking.....so you're thinking it's not wise to drop into second on a steep grade? unless maybe my coast clutch is toast and I'm in denial still... Maybe its a torque converter problem, that would explain engine shutdown....I'll get an appointment with a dealer here in the Medford area, and post what we find out

Reason: more info
I am a transmission boob - very little understanding of the inner workings of that black box. What I do know is what I've learned through YouTube videos, experimenting while watching all my OBDII gauges, and mistakes made before the wonderful world of OBDII gauges.
I monitor Torque Converter Slip, RPMs, Speed, Transmission Fluid Temp, etc.... I know precisely when I'm in lock-up, when I'm not, and when I can't be on my 3.73 gearing. Anything below about 28 MPH drags the RPMs so low that the torque converter has to unlock with my HD4R100. From a video I found on YouTube somewhere (can't remember which one), the TCLU precludes the transmission from being in first or second gear - it can only lock in 3rd or 4th.
Again... I'm a boob on this topic, so my input is little more than a prompt to conduct a search to verify what I bring to the discussion.
Yep, Mine too...and every time you apply the brakes it un-locks as well....I really hope I haven't hurt anything...The manual lock up switch is sounding more attractive
