I was on the road a 1000 miles from home when my change oil light came on. Stopped by the local ford dealer but he was scheduling several days in the future. I didn't have the strap wrench, bucket or funnels to do it myself. So I had to gamble.
I knew if it didn't get changed I'd be 1500 miles past the change oil message before I got home. Better to pay somebody to do it and watch them like a hawk than to run that many miles past the oil change due date. I'm already nervous about going more than 5000-6000 miles per oil change. So when the light comes on, I change it.

Why not plan out your oil changes instead of waiting for them to hit? If you are within a thousand or two miles and you're going on a long haul - change it before you leave and be done with it. That's what I'd do. My longest trek takes me about 2,000 miles round trip. When I get up to it this year I'll probably change the oil before I head out.
