Dealer changed my oil previously b/c it was free. I noticed yesterday after 4k mi. the oil was very dark and smelled like burned noodles on the stove. I changed the oil and switched to rotella t6. What would cause the oil to smell like this. Motorcraft oil was previously used. No its not the HPFP!
I only use the microwave for my mac and cheese, so I have no idea what that smells like.
Now I gotta go smell my oil, I hope my wife doesn't see me doing this. I already got caught timing my tailgate drop.
I am vigilant on watching my gages and did not see any overheating. I hate to say it but I question if the dealer didnt reset the oil life and wipe of the filter. I have seen some crazy stuff around here. They did it for free of coarse.
lol Yeah, I was just thinking ... maybe too many Cold Ones.
This is my first diesel, so it took a while to get used to the smell. Don't know about you.
I had the oil changed at a quick change place and they put in 15 qts, When they pulled it out of the bay and handed me the paperwork, I noticed the 15 qt charge and called them on it. They of course said thats where full on the dip stick was, I pulled the manual and showed them that it only takes 13 qts. So they pulled it back in and drained it and refilled it to the proper 13 qts.
The oil that came out, had been in the engine had only been runing for less than 5 minutes. It was every bit at black as the oil I normally take out after 7500 miles. So there is apparently enough soot laying around in the oil pan etc that it immediately discolors new oil.
I now no longer worry about the color of the oil. It will always be black once it has passed thru the engine.

I noticed the same thing after my first oil change, drove a couple minutes from the dealer to fill up and checked the oil level before leaving the gas station and the oil was already quite dark.
Its ok now just smells like oil. Only 300 mi on it since yesterday. The soot in the engine makes sense. Its my first diesel as well so still learning. I just got back from dinner and now you have me thinking about pizza and beer!! Thanks guys at least the tail pipe don't smell like french frys.

Glad you caught that, Painted. I think you were brave to take your truck to one of those quick change places. I've heard so many stories about them. Forgetting to tighten the plug, too much/not enough oil, cheap filter, etc.
I guess I would if I had no other choice at the time, but like you, I'd watch them like a hawk!
