thanks. can you shed some light as to why the mechanic at the transmission shop told me to go change the filter? this was after i had told him that i dropped the pan, drained the torque converter and replaced the fluid with merconIII/dextron. he asked me what color was the old fluid and if it smelled burnt. i said black and no. he says: "you dropped the pan and you didn't change the filter? why didn't you change the filter?". i told him that i needed the truck later that day and couldn't wait for the auto part store to order the right one. so he tells me: "well the lines are flushed, drop the pan and change the damn filter!"

It may be clogged. If your fluid was black there is a good chance the trans is toast.
Many people, including some trans shops, insist on always changing the filter. Ford doesn't recommend changing the internal filter except when the transmission is rebuilt.
