grrrrrrr i got a bad case of po p*ss *ff i bought a 79 f250 s/c last week for the 460 for my bronco after spending time to get it running good [carb,fuel/filter,vac advance issues] the truck was running real good when i noticed coolant driping down the engine by the fuel pump i went to a buddys shop and washed every thing with hot water&soap and found the coollant coming from the water pump to block cover upon inspecting some more i seen new gaskets/sealant between the water pump/plate/front cover and old gasket between the front cover/block the question i have,is it possable to replace the water pump only with out removing the whole assembly as that seems to me what the po did [somehow] any ways it looks like i have to pull that all apart grrrrrrr
Yes, you can install the water pump without disturbing the timing cover. I've done it lots of times. Just be careful not to disturb the timing cover to block gasket and you'll be fine. Also, make SURE you put all the bolts back in the correct holes. The bolts come in three or four different lengths and it is possible to ruin the timing cover by punching through it if you try to put too long a bolt in the holes.
thanks for the info thats what it looks like happened the drip is around the port that goes into the head that fellow just caused me more work than i wanted to get into but i have to pull the intake any ways to reseal so may as well put a cam in it if i am going to go that far
23 the 400 is a differnt set up for the water pump i acualy found it easeir to do than the 460 EXEPT there is 1 or 2 bolts on the bottom of the water pump that go into threaded inserts on the water pump to block plate when i redid the pump, cam, timeing set i found 1 insert stripped and had to get a shop to weld a nut on the back side to install the bolt correctly to avoid leaks i tried to sell the complete 400 due to my 460 conversion but no intrest in alberta for these engines so i will strip the edelbrock intake, comp 260cam/lifters/double timeing set/water pump/fuel pump/ [all new with maby 500 miles on them]set of 2wd headers [used] and sell if you would be intrested pm me the 400 has a bad rear main seal leak and thats why the 460 conversion
