Mama had her surgery Thursday at Mayo's in Rochester, MN. Everything went very well and she is doing wonderful. We are visiting her mother in Missouri right now and hope to boogie over to Illinois next week and see some of my family. Thanks to you guys for your prayers and words of kindness.
The past two months have been very demanding on my time. We have been fixing up a rental property to try and sell and we now have an offer on the place. We are scheduled to close on August 1 and then that chapter will close. Wifey was in Europe three weeks in June. And now the trip to Mayo's is almost complete. And then in my spare time I had to work. WHEW! Too busy. While I have tried to stay caught up on what's been going on, there hasn't been much time left for participating.
Hopefully, things are slowing back down to the pace I prefer. Mama isn't supposed to go 4-wheelin for four weeks, so we'll just have to kick back a little and spend some time in the 5er.
Gigger - I like your post on the 1 page thread about time. It is so true.
Everyone enjoy your summer and your families. Oh yeah, and your trucks.
@Ron - That's great news about the wifey, I hope she has a speedy recovery. What part of Illinois are you headed too?
@Paul - I hope all went well for you in Colorado.
@Gerry - Matt (with the Fummins) is just too busy, he has a small trucking company and he is buried with work, plus it's truck pulling season, so I decided not to lay my project in his lap and just do the ring and pinion setup myself. So far so good, I just got done with my first contact pattern and I'm running at the top near the toe, so my first adjustment is moving the pinion .020" closer to the ring gear. The backlash is .018" so I should also be reducing that. I'll let you know how is goes.

It's been a few years since I messed with a ring and pinion set. That was fun and informative. I used to do all my own mechanical work on my vehicles. Anymore it's just oil/lube, filters, and brake jobs. Miss those days.
We will be in Salem, IL on Tuesday afternoon to see my cousin and a couple aunts/uncles. Then on Wed we take off for Rochester, MN via I-57 and I-74, for mamas post-op check. Then, off to Wonderful Wyoming.
Gavin, with new gears the backlash needs to be 9 or 10 thousands with the bearing caps in place torqued at 80 foot pounds............ how much preload did you have on the pinion bearings once you get it spinning, should be about 25 inch pounds ........ is that a collapsable sleeve or shims on that one
I know I used to watch some techs beat on pinion nut. With impact I told them by the time you get it to start to crush ya done went to far. Then if you took nut back off and removed brg all you see is knicks in the race from brg chattering. I said they make a tool to hold yoke and get a long. Cheater pipe when you just feel it start to crush.Stop and ck with torque wrench. Im like you gig I love building diffs.
Sorry guys, I had already removed the bearing caps and then thought about taking the pic. I adjusted the inner pinion shims from .055 to .045 and the outer from .090 to .080, so now the backlash is .012", pinion preload is 20 in/lb. What do you guys think of the drive contact pattern?
I'm gonna take a break and go ride my bike. I'll check back later.
You're right, there is a ''nack'' to it but I would never put the pinion nut on with an impact............ I agree, we have to hold the yoke so we're not tightening or loosening against the gear teeth...... do you still hold/pay for your tech license to renew it ?
You done great Gavin, The preload is acceptable............. the backlash should be about 9 thow, the contact pattern is almost perfect but we like to see a little more tooth contact
