7.3 idi FUEL ISSUE... Please Help
Here's the deal (exhale deeply), I recently purchased a 1994 f350 with 7.3 idi NON turbo... Thank goodness. When I bought it it did not smoke often. It had teo cracked return lines I replaced and loose injector line that dripped. It starts very easy.
HERE is the issue. It would here and there smoke white and when raced up...around 1500-2000+ would stutter hard and DUMP white/blue smoke. Not positive on the blue part but at least white with a tiny bit of blue. It gets horrible mileage around 13. It was rare the not rare then rare to not do it and now does it all the time. it doesnt smoke under a load. Even goosed it won't put out any black smoke..nothing. It only has white smoke in neutral and park or at idle in gear.
I have been trying to figure it out for a month. I have replaced the lift pump as I had low fuel pressure/fluctuating. I have ran a hose into a can of fuel from the fuel pump to exclude any fuel air issues on the suction side of the pump.
My main question here. Can my injector pump be bad? I have come to the conclusion that it is most likely that. Is it adjusted improperly perhaps? I have no fuel in my oil either.
I'm really hoping someone can help me out with this one I for the life of me can not figure this out.
injector pump life expectancy is between 100 and 150 thousand miles.
normal signs of injector pump dying is surging, and loss of governor (over reving)
what does the smoke smell like? white smelling like unburnt fuel is also a sign of leaking or poor spraying injectors.
injector life is also in the 100 to 150 thousand mile range
The smoke doesnt burn my eyes haha i put my face in the stacks i have this morning..hard to say the smell, just like heavy diesel smoke.
Ive done a ton of research of pretty much everything i have tried on it..i just replaced the fuel filter today and it is better and not stuttering/smoking at high rpm. I beleive it was getting enouph fuel to run but wasnt flowing through enouph to clear air out of the filter return line. BTW the check valve on the filter return had no spring (found out couple days ago) which allowed the ball to stop flow TO the return line thus no air could escape and would go straight to the IP. I got a sprin from a pen and stretched it to the correct length works fine now. But this truck is so random and i think i fix it sometimes and the promblem comes back i just hope it stays good.
Now...I removed the rear tank when i had my bed off because it was rotted and plugged the lines. It still has the valves to switch the tanks with the quick disconnects and there are quick disconnects on my front tank with stainless lines to the valves. I put a clear vinyl hose befor the valve to see air in the return. There is air pockets here and there going through. Do the quick disconnects usually cause problems. And can i try bypassing the tank solenoind valve setup straight to my front tank? I dont know how i could run a new line to the stainless quick disconnects on my front tank.
