I just replaced my rear tank, the fuel tank switch both fuel pick-ups and all the fuel line between the switch and tanks with fuel injection hose. I was careful to tighten all the screw-type hose clamps tightly and I installed a new inline filter after the tank sw and before my electric lift pump. I installed my back up pump, to see how well it worked and it blew white smoke for about 10 mins. It runs poorly even though it no longer blows white smoke. So, I changed the lift pump...no change. 10 mins of white smoke. Shut it off and waited a hour...3-4 mins of white smoke. I used a hand powered vaccuum pump/guage to check the fuel line from the pump to the engine and it slowly dropped from 15" hg to about 10", where it was steady for a coupla' minutes. My primary wix fuel filter was replaced about a week ago. Does anyone have any ideas/suggestions? Before this, it ran great, although it only has been getting 14 mpg. I have a recently rebuilt ip and injectors and all glow plugs are fairly new with a manual control switch installed and check out with an ohm meter.
did you crack any of the lines loose at the injectors to help purge the air; some times it just won't work it's way out on it's own. try to purge it at the filter first.
I guess I'll try cracking the injector lines...I noticed it's still blowing a little white smoke after a 10 mile run and the power is way down and the tranny shifts hard. A friend thought it might be water...but, I checked the water separator and there was no water in the fuel filter. I just can't imagine where it could be sucking air. The fuel tank switch I bought from rock auto online has a vent tube next to the two pair of fuel lines from the tanks. I wonder if that could be my air leak? The electrical connector didn't fit the new sw. I had to jury rig it.

Being a 90. If you disturbed the fuel line on the frame. There would be a good chance you have a small crack in the line. I didn't do any line work on my 93 BUT I found that a rusty line will let air in but no fuel out. I'd look there first (at the line).
