I've got a 400 with a comp cams roller cam installed. I ordered a composite distributor gear and the gear diameter is wrong. The shaft diameter is good as it gos on but, the gear its self is too small to mesh with the cam gear. I am waiting for a reply from comp cams as i write this. Would anyone know if there is a composite gear made for the 400? Popa John
beartracks, I've done a search for a composite gear for the 351C-351M/400 and 460 with no luck. Would you be able to point me in the right direction? John
Is there any reason why you are going composite? I dont really trust these sort of things for timing. Seen them on other style motors on timing chains/gears. No warning when they fail just strip and motor dead. A dizzy gear would be a lot easier to replace than a faulty timing set but the initial result the same-stuck on the side of the road. I would stll be looking for a metallic gear
Thanks guys. After a discussion with Comp Cams they let it me know that they DON'T make composite gears for the 335 and 385 series of Ford engines. Asking WHY they make roller cams and lifters for the same .........demand for them. Go figure, demand for roller cams and lifters but NO demand for composite distributor gears????? end of rant. Craig, good read on the gear thingy so I am going with the bronze gear. The truck is NOT a daily driver so I should be OK with that gear. Popa John
Craig, YOU know it !!!! @Wallingnuma, I was lead to believe that a composite gear was the way to go on a street /strip engine but............when you ask questions you get answers. The general feeling I got from this forum on the subject was don't use it. So you will have to agree that experiened ppl know much better on what works and what doesn't. Again thanks to all who set me straight on this. Besides the bronze gaer is a LOT cheaper than the composite one. Popa John
Stock cast dizzy gears will eat the drive gear up on a roller (billet) cam. Bronz gears sove the problem but wear out quickly and must be replaced. All the bronz goes though your engine.
I haven't used composit gears but have used the alloy gears and they work great and don't wear out.
