85 f250 4x4 conversion question

Hey guys im new on here, names Daniel. I have a 85 F250 6.9 diesel with a 4 speed tranny and 2wd. Im wanting to make it 4x4. Ive found a 91 F250 thats 4x4 but has a inline 6 with a 4 speed behind it(tranny is shot). My question is will the transfer case and everything bolt up from the 91 to my 85? Im not swaping trannys, just wanting to add the transfer case and front end to my truck to make it 4x4. any advice is greatly appreciated!! thanks!

Daniel

Welcome to FTE.
Quick answer is no, it wont bolt up to your 2wd trans without an adapter. I don't know if the front axle will bolt up or not, but I would think it should.

Thanks for the reply! The adapter youre talking about, would it be an adapter for the spline gears to mesh up or something, or would it be a metal plate with the correct holes to bolt the transfer case to? Would you happen to know if the adapter can be bought? Sorry about all the questions, im a little bit of a newbie when it comes to the drive terrain.

And as far as the front axle, im planning on drilling/cutting to mount it in because my 85 f250 has coil springs and id be swapping to leaf springs off the 91 f250.

The adapter would be to convert the output of the 2wd trans so the transfer case would bolt to it. Probably be cheaper to pick up a 4wd trans from the junkyard.

There is no 4x4 "adapter" to convert a 2wd trans to take a transfer case. Yes, a 2wd trans can be converted to accept a transfer case, but it needs to be torn down completely, and the correct parts installed inside the tranny, so it's just like a total rebuild of the trans, plus some parts you need also. It is easier to get a 4x4 tranny. The transfer case you are getting with the truck will bolt on though, once you get a 4x4 diesel tranny.

You are correct, the 4x4 frontend will need some drilling for it to fit, and also the front of the frame will need a little bit of welding and or brackets to fit the shackle. You will see what I mean when you look at the donor frame in the front area.

OP, you could also run a divorced transfer case behind your 2WD transmission. If you have the necessary skills to drill/cut/weld things to put the leaf sprung front axle in, you've got the skills to fab up transfer case mounts/ a crossmember. I'd do that with an NP205 transfer case. But that's just me.

Just sayin'.

So the NP205 transfer case doesnt bolt directly to the transmission? Im assuming theres just a shaft that runs from the tranny to the transfer case? And yeah i believe i could make a crossmember.

The transmission output shafts are different 2WD vs. 4WD.

Well, NP 205's of the divorced variety don't bolt directly to the transmision. And you basically hit the nail on the head. The nice thing about divorced transfer case is the ability to run just about whatever transfer case you want to run, and it makes clocking them so much easier.

Here's an illustration.

With the divorced transfer case, one thing leads to another, and I do not know if it's worth the headache. You have to figure and scratch your head on everything, the mounts, the shifter and it's linkages, even the driveshafts will have to be custom made. If you get the correct tranny, the tranny/transfer is a bolt in with the correct factory parts.
