While driving yesterday, I couldn't help myself and set the Edge on level 5 for a 6th gear fly-by on a Mustang. The truck was pulling really well and then all of a sudden it quit pullng and revs went through the roof.
I've never had any previous indications that the clutch was going out, so I'm not sure if it is failing or it just had too much torque on it. Either way I'd like to replace it.
I did a little searching and found some information, but some of the posts were a little dated. What I have found so far seems to suggest that I need the single mass flywheel, new bolts, the factory pressure plate, the plastic throwout bushings, and the south bend clutch disc is highly recommended.
Anything I missed here? Any other recommendations? Thanks in advance for the replies.
single mass is what you have now. duel mass was on 7.3 only iirc anyway
On 6.0L equipped trucks, 250/350 applications came from the factory with the dual mass flywheels. Only 450/550 trucks came equipped with the single mass flywheel. In any event, it's a moot point. Even if the OP were to have it replaced, he will need to convert it to the single mass unit anyways. For a 2003 model year, it doesn't list a clutch kit available from Ford. According to the Microcat catalogue, you apparently have to buy all parts separately. I called BS on that one, on one such truck that I ran into this issue. What I ended up doing was pricing out a clutch kit from Ford for a newer model year (can't remember which one off the top of my head), only to find out that the kit included ALL identical part numbers of all the parts that were listed separately for a 2003!!! Long story short, buying the kit from Ford, shaved $1000 off of the total cost of the parts!!! If the OP desires part numbers, I can provide it.
Thanks m-chan68!
I appreciate the information. I love the feel of the stock clutch, it's very driveable and I spend a lot of time in my truck. I would like the part number for the kit you mentioned, but my only concern is whether the stock setup will hold up or not. I bought this truck with 124K miles on it, and I suspect that everything is stock (original). I have 145K miles now and I'm just not sure how much of my clutch problem is normal wear and how much is due to the tuner.
I would like to believe that I am pretty mindful of my clutch when driving, I almost never apply throttle when taking off unless I'm in traffic, and that is rare. I know that the tuner plays a big role in this, but I would be very surprised if I have more than 400 hp.
Devildoctater I appreciate the advice. I have looked at the South Bend site and I will be calling them tomorrow to get their recommendation also. The dual disc setup is in the $1800 range IIRC, and while that is more than I want to spend right now, I'd rather spend it now than do it twice for $1000 each time.
Reps all around!! Thanks!

Reason: Can't rep cheezit right now but I tried. Thanks cheezit!
I just went with the highest single disk clutch I could find through south bend and it holds amazing most of the time. If I had to do it again, I would go with the dual disk clutch. Just my opinion and it gives you more room to play around with more mods.
