I've been thinking about getting a brand new turbo kit for my NA '84 6.9L IDI with T-19 4spd. I'm not impressed by how it tows my trailer and I don't want to buy a Powerstroke or do an engine swap.
I've been looking at both the Hypermax and Banks kits online and was wondering if any of you guys have installed them or run them in your trucks.
Looks like the hypermax costs just under $2k but I can't find a cost online for the Banks. Also, the Banks boasts that their Sidewinder will get: "gains up to +82 hp and +143 lb-ft torque, tow up the grade 53% quicker, and provide up to a phenomenal 29% fuel economy improvement."
Sounds pretty optimistic to me, but idk
The Hypermax "Pulse" turbo doesn't list what it is supposed to add in terms of HP and torque.
I think that the Banks is wastegated and the Hypermax is not, but again I'm not too sure on this one...
As I mentioned, I want the added power for towing. Any thoughts?
im running a Banks wastegaited set up on my 7.3, made a big diffrence over stock. still no powerstroke but it pulls my gooseneck. your gearing makes a big diffrence too
There's been a few used kits in the marketplace lately for less than half new retail cost.
Aside from any turbo setup, the best upgrade you can do is a big y-pipe/up pipe, and big exhaust. The stock stuff chokes the engine down, and combined with the tiny stock air filter it's pretty sad.
last i checked, banks kits were running just under $3k. i'm dreaming of installing a kit on my van, but of course, 2-3k isn't exactly pocket change for most of us.
my logic says that if the 2 turbos put out the same boost pressure, they should have about the same improvements in HP, torque, and economy, but i haven't experimented with them to confirm this.
There has been a lot of discussion on here as far as ATS vs Banks, but I haven't seen a lot on the Hypermax Pulse kit. There are differences, mostly in the turbo outlet to the downpipe, but there are also fixes for the lower flowing ones.
youll have to remember that the hypermax is nonwastegaited and the banks is wastegaited, both have their pros and cons. 84-6.9 is running the hypermax on his truck, when i was looking at a used hypermax he told me he loved his, but the deal didnt go through and i ended up finding the banks in better shape for less money so thats what i went with. x2 on looking for a good used kit. print off the parts break down and take it with you when you go look at one. parts are still avaliable from banks and hypermax both
the primary turbo kits are the banks and ats units.
why buy new when you can get a good used unit for between $500 and $1000?
I looked on the ATS website and it didn't look like they make turbo kits for the IDIs anymore... ? Are you talking about used ones? Why isn't Hypermax one of the "primary" kits?
Sounds like getting a used one is pretty do-able and much cheaper. Where do you guys look for used kits? Ebay? Craigslist?

Also, is the consensus that if you turbo you need to put in head studs? Seems like it depends on the boost PSI, but how do you know what PSI your turbo makes until you've already installed and are running it?

I've sold 4 ats 093 kits so far, one being the ats upgrade unit. I seem to run across them quite frequently....I can try to get u one if you'd like to go the ats route

ATS no longer supports the idi engine.no more turbo,no more parts from them.
if you look for a used kit, make sure its complete,or you'll be hunting.
hypermax is not a popular kit because not many people buy new.a lot of idi trucks sell for less then new turbo's now.doesn't seem to be many used ones either.
banks like hypermax is still in full production.can call them up for any missing parts your likely be in need of with used kits.
i found my used banks here in the marketplace.those are the two big places to find them though.also other diesel sites market place sections.
Hypermax is wastegated idk where you got your info from....If you buy a used kit....I make most of the pieces that are usually missing...
awesome, that's good to hear. I was just looking at the long parts list wondering where all of this stuff would come from if I bought used... I'm guessing you'll be hearing from me again then, thanks for letting me know

the hypermax turbo kits are not a popular as the banks or ats.
ebay, and craigs list are two places, also look in the fte classifieds.
head studs are not needed unless you are going to build a big engine.
most waste gated units are boost limited at 10-11 lbs, the banks non waste gate units can boost 14-16 lbs at full throttle with an open exhaust under load, but usually stay around 5-8 lbs under normal driving.
