Can I use Mercon V in this transmission on my 96' Explorer 4.0L 4wd auto, or am I suppose to use the Mercon/Dexron fluid. Thanks

It is recommended by Ford that you upgrade to Mercon V. It is a better fluid designed to be used in place of Mercon ATF. It has better friction modifiers, more stability, and better lubrisocity, but is 100% compatible.

as Khan said, it is an upgrade. Some stores dont carry the old Mercon.

10-4 on that steve; can you put the mercon V in the transfer case and power steering.
