Alternater short/problem

Alternater short/problem

Should Alternater case have power to it if you short case to metal fender??????
I dont think it should but cant find any short or unless could it be internal short????
This while sitting key off 1984 6.9

The alt case should not have power, it is grounded through the mounting bolts. More details about what you've got going on would help.

Was driving every day,untill week ago,went Monday started fine,went to tire place about 30 miles and went to restart dead,charged up and drove home,belt worn so on replacing it wrench on top alt bolt ,touched other metal and sparks flew,
been checking wires for a short and cant find nothing,seems to be charging now,guage doesnt work.
but still have current thru case,must be inside alt.

The only bolt on the alt that should do that is the one that holds the bat wire to it. If the mounting bolt sparked when you hit another ground (unlikely) you must have had the key or something on and a bad ground. Do you have a voltmeter? Check from the alt case to bat -, it should read 0v.

Got.04 with voltmeter,and draining battery,time for major surgery i guess,
key was not even in switch everything off
