DIY Oil Change
DIY Oil Change
Gentleman,
In the next few months I will be doing my own oil change, and I had a few questions about the materials I need:
1. What type of oil is good? I've seen Rotella (sp?), and the Royal Purple. Anyone have some good recommendations?
2. I will probably stick with the 15-40 since it does not get cold here...should I go to Synthetic?
3. Where is a good place to get the filter from? i know its important to use Motorcraft but I thought I remember reading that some folks on here got the filter from some website that sells Ford parts.
Any other tips for sucess would be nice as well, Thanks!
Cheers,

SAE 5W-40 Full Synthetic Diesel Motor Oil
Rotella T6 5w40
2. You should use a 5w40 Syn oil your injectors will like it.
3 Oil filters Walmart MotorCraft FL-2016

I think you'll notice a difference with the 5W40 synthetic, even in the warmer climate. You can get the filter from China Mart in Fram (CH9549) and it's the same as the Motorcraft FL2016. Just be sure to open the box and check to make sure some jackleg didn't switch and return it. If you order ALL the truck filters in "bulk" you can get a good deal from Dieselfiltersonline.com and save some shipping.
Fixed it for ya
If you are going to start doing your own service work, might I suggest:
Water drain valve:
DTS Articles - HFCM Water Separator Drain Plug Upgrade
Fumoto oil drain valve:
F-111 or the F-111N The "N" has a nipple to attach a drain tube.
I went with the F-111N. For ease? No, Ford charged me $15 for a new copper washer for their drain plug. Not any more!

Ah, is draining the water separator part of the oil change as well? I was under impression you did this when you changed the fuel filters (which I will probably try to do myself as well when time comes)
Yes, you should drain it at least that often. One, it helps you see if your fuel supplier is good. Two, keeping the water out of there, reduces the amount of rust that can take place in there.
everyone i know with a 6.0l either runs 5-40 or 10-30 was always told the 6.0l didnt like the 15-40 so i would recomend one of them 2 as far as oil filter I use fram and the 10-30 motocraft oil and these trucks are the easiest vehicle i have ever changed the oil on hands down
