I have a 68 F250 that has always started quickly. Lately if it sits for a few days the battery will run down and it wont' start without a little shot of starter fluid. If driven daily, no problem. May be two separate problems. Had battery checked and its "fine". Engine is a 360 and recently tuned up and carb recently overhauled.
Does it turn slowly? and not have enough power to start? Then likely you have a drain and need to address that. Or it could be a weak starter motor. Or bad battery cables.
Few things: remove negative battery cable and install test light between cable and battery. With everything off, bulb should be out. If it's lit up at all then you have a drain and need to find it. Do you have a late model radio? that will cause a drain with the memory in it. Shouldn't kill a battery in couple days, but you get what I mean.
Next thing, before you start it(and you know it will have issues), removed the air cleaner lid and pump the throttle. Make sure you have fuel available, as the accel pump should put a shot of fuel when you hit throttle.
If the fuel is evaporating too much(typical fuel these days), and the battery is too weak to turn motor to fill bowl, that is the issue. Still need to find electrical drain on battery.
I do have aftermarket radio but wired only thru key. I'll try that battery/light test. Does turn slow.
Is there anything to keep gas from siphoning back to tank when sits like a "check valve". I do pump pedal but dont really smell lots of gas like i would expect?
It's not actually siphoning, it's evaporating from the fuel bowl in the carb(through the vent tube in the top).
You won't smell the gas when you pump it, you need to look down the carb and see if fuel comes out when you do it. Sometimes you can hear it "squirt", but visual is better.
