I have a 72 F100 4x4 with power steering. It turns to the left with no problem but will hardly turn to the right at all. I've spent hours under the truck looking for things that might be out of place but I don't have an extensive knowledge of what I'm looking at. I'm only a descent mechanic. I think I've narrowed it down to the steering gear box itself. All the linkages seem to be in tact. The stablizer that runs from the frame to the front axle housing only has one bolt in it and gives quite a bit when trying to turn. Could that be my problem?
The P/S has been swapped in from another vehicle, as no 4WD was available with P/S until 1973.
1973/76 F100 4WD's used Power Assist P/S. There is a P/S control valve and ram cylinder, the manual gearbox is used, as it has nothing to do with the P/S.
I knew that. It's been swapped with a 79 year model power steering. I think the pump is actually from an early 80's model. I replaced the steering box and the nut and bolt on the bracket for the steering stablizer arm. Nothing worked. The truck still won't turn to the right. I'm going to try to jack the front end up and remove the pitman arm and change the position on it. Maybe that will work.
You say it doesn't turn to the right. Does it turn way too far to the left? If it does, re-indexing the pitman arm may fix it. If turning to the left is normal, could be another issue. Is it lifted? Could possibly need a longer draglink.
Yea it's lifted. It turns so far to the left that the tires rub the frame. I'm going to try the pitman arm and see what that does. I'm thinking that could be where my problem is. It seems to turn way far to the left but just a little to the right and then the pump starts screaming like it's bottomed out the worm gear in the box. If there's anything else it could be please don't be shy. let me know. I'm almost at the end of the line with it.
That's a good idea. I had planned on doing that anyway as soon as funds were available but even though it's not hitting the frame and clears it both ways i think i may just go ahead and do that.
Disconnect the pitman arm and rotate the box via the steering wheel (count the turns) could be 2 1/2 one way, center the shaft and re-connect the pitman arm.
Did this start once you did the conversion? If so, Ditto what mblayton says. If it just started doing this on its own then something else it he problem.
Would you mind positn pics of the 79 box in your f100?
I'm tempted to do the mod Nod has as an article on this site, but am thinking of leaving the pitman forward rather than turning it to the rear. I'm curious how yours is set up. Also, is the box mounted directly to the frame or is there a spacer/plate added?
