Need some help guys?
*White residue around degas bottle cap
*Color & condition of the coolant
*CAC boot condition
*EOT/ECT delta (would need something like a ScanGauge II to see this)
*FICM voltage (also need a ScanGauge)
*EGR cooler condition
*Oasis/CarFax report
*Cold starting issues?
*Hot starting issues?
*OEM bolts or studs (look for the bottom row of bolts/studs outside the rocker boxes)
*Aftermarket parts (intakes, exhaust, tuners...you really don't want 'em)
Don't let anyone convince you the 6.0L is a bucket of bolts. True, in the early years they had issues. But most of that was lack of training and a couple of minor design issues. The 6.0L is full of all kinds of information on them and allot of knowledgeable folks.
Your really going to need a gauge to see How well it runs or that should give a good Idea anyway
Autozone sells a ScanGauge II its great for this truck

If there is white residue around the degas bottle (overflow tank) that says either (A) the cap needs to be replaced since it's not holding up to the 16psi spec or (B) you've got an EGR cooler/headgasket leaking. Not the end of the world, but it's something I want to know about ahead of time.
Unless your planning to build a stump pulling monster (more than 500hp) the OEM air filter & intake is the best you'll find for these engines. I'm not a fan of chrome under the hood. An aftermarket intake isn't a bad thing...but if it's got one...what else has been done to the truck? Not all tuners are bad...but there are a couple out there that are just down right murder on the truck's components.
The Oasis is a Ford only report that will tell you all repairs (warranty & non-warranty) done to the truck at any Ford dealership. The CarFax might show other repairs done at a non-Ford shop.
The Hot/Cold starting issues can be a couple of things but you shouldn't have any trouble starting the truck when it's 20F outside and it's been sitting all night unplugged. Same goes for when it's hot. Should be able to fire it right up after it's been shut down following a 20 mile run on the interstate. If not, would want to know why.
The EOT/ECT delta is the difference in Engine Oil Temp & Engine Coolant Temp. If it's more than 15F while driving down the interstate...more than likely a clogged oil cooler. Again, not the end of the world...but a serous & time consuming repair.
The CAC (Charge Air Cooler) boots are those 4" OD rubber hoses that carry compressed air from the turbo, to the intercooler and back to the intake elbow. Over time the one by the turbo can crack & start leaking CCV oil vapor. Not a hard DIY repair...but it's worth looking for.
The one that I keep leaving off that list...aftermarket oil filter. The oil filter cap should look like the one on the left side of this photo:
If not, buyer beware. Someone had been running aftermarket oil filters on the truck. They may fit, but they're not the best for the engine and can/will cause starting & filtering issues. If you have more questions...feel free to ask 'em here in this thread.
