Here's the issue I am having with the 400 I have in my 1978 F-150:
I am getting a pop, pop, pop type backfire when I hit the gas and it also happens when the truck downshifts going up a hill/incline. Those are the only times it does this. Never happens if you are easy on the gas or at idle only when hitting the gas more then halfway or when it downshifts. Its automatic and has an edelbrock 4 barrel on it. Any thoughts as to what might be happening here
Kinda sounds like it's "pinging" from what I've asked around. Mine does it on hard accel but I'm not worried cause I'm replacing the motor soon. What grade gas do you run in it?
I normally run 87 never had a problem. I have tried using 93 the last few tanks and still the same problem.
I put this engine in about a year ago and had it backfire once or twice after putting in then, but it didn't do it again till now. It does it when ever the engine revs up. If I baby the gas or don't get on it there is no problem. Only when I get on the gas or when it downshifts going up a hill
I would hook up a vacuum gauge to it and see what it is going on inside. Back fires and popping are usually ignition, timing and valve train related. Burnt or stuck valves, bent pushrods and broken rockers too. They show themselves when under load, but will gradually be noticed more and more as they continue to fail.
