Help, wrong engine!

Hey all, I am working on a 1974 f-100 that does not have the original engine in it. I was told that it was now a 351m when I started the project. The motor was tired and had one pretty dead piston. We decided to build a 400 to replace it. Just pulled out the 351 and it turns out its a cleveland not an m! Now I am in big trouble. What will it take to do this swap? I have the C-6 that came with the 400, so I assume I will be swapping that in as well. I will obviously need a shorter driveshaft, will I need a different tranny cross member? Are the frame mounts the same for the engine or will I need to modify those too? The 400 core came from a car and the car mounts are obviously different. If I get the truck mounts will the motor bolt to the frame? Any advice is appreciated. I am tearing my hair out from listening to the mechanic who told me it was a 351m and not making sure before spending plenty of money on this 400. Thanks, Jeremya72

If you got the time sell the 400 and rebuild the 351c.

Yeah, I like the Cleveland MUCH more than the 400. The Cleveland has a small block bell housing. You'll need the big block C6. I'm not sure if anything other than the bell housing is different. (transmission-wise) Cars engine mounts are different. Car oil pans are mostly front sump, too. If the truck is 4wd, the front sump pan will work. Otherwise, you'll have to find a truck pan and oil pick up too.

Having a 351 Cleveland is NOT a bad thing. Build the Cleveland and have the baddest F250 on the block.

You have all the parts you need to swap in the 400 that you already started to build ? Save the 351c for another project or sell it . Wake up the 400 and it will provide plenty of power for daily drive as well as a weekend warrior

Not saying that I know what you have but the engines are from the same family.
Here is a good article on the subject.

Yeah, same engine family. Same heads, same distributor, etc... Different motor mounts and different bellhousing bolt pattern. A 351m/400 will not just bolt in where a 351c came out.

Since you have a '74 I'll include this section if for no other reason than interest.
It's from the following pages that are not viewable unless you're a member.

Remember that the 351M and 400 were designed to bolt up to Fords existing big-block (385 series) transmissions. However in '73 Ford produced a small number of 400 engines with a small-block (Windsor) bellhousing pattern, such as the one shown right. Rumor is this was done for the Panteras in case 351C supply fell short. Casting number is D3AE-B, if you think you've got one.

That's interesting, never heard that before. Unfortunately, the one I have is the normal big block bellhusing. Oh well, I was eventually planning to swap the C6 in anyway for towing my big trailer

I went back and reread to make sure I get it.
Let me see if I'm with you.
You have a 351C that you were told was a 351M.
Because it's not a 351M you bought a 400M.
So now you have a 400M and a 351C.

What exactly do you like so much better, the bellhousing bolt pattern or the lower deck height? You do realize that the 400 is for all intents and purposes a 351 cleveland with 49 extra cubes, right?
