I purchased a 03 Expedition a week ago... Love the Truck!!! Having a strange problem tho. I'm pulling approx. 6 amps. with the ignition off, while testing the draw with a multimeter I noticed that it started droping to approx .25 Amps ( Acceptable ) It seems like it was pulling for approx. 20 sec. & dropped off to the .25 Amps for about 45 sec. Then while it was spiking the starter was trying to engage, & the radio came on! This was with the multimeter in line. A friend, after that happened, put the key in the ignition in the off postion ran the same test & the truck actually started without turning the key. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!!!!!!
Just a tip (or maybe you already know), when you go to put your multimeter in line, before you remove the battery cable from the battery post, first clip one side of your meter to the battery cable CLAMP, put the other meter probe on the battery post, THEN remove the battery cable clamp from the post.
(If you remove the clamp from the post first, and then hook your meter in line, you will have broken the circuit. When you then connect your meter in line and complete the circuit, a number of modules will wake up and draw extra current for up to 40 minutes.)
BTW, no factory equiped Expy after a 40 minute rest should have a parasitic draw in excess of 24-26 mA, which is 0.024-0.026 Amps, so your .25 amps is too high. If your multimeter is auto rangeing, if you can lock it down to one of the lower ranges, it might make it easier to read.
You might want to also check for a windshield leak - if it drips water down on the GEM all kinds of strange electrical gremblins can occurr.
Well... First of all Thanks for the Advise!! Found my Gremlin...Rear Wiper Motor!!! Talked with a mechanic Friend of mine he told me it was a pretty common thing with the Expeditions. Thanks Again!!
