tdc question

so i got the 351w from a 76 van installed into my 86 f150 when i went to set tdc on the 1st cylinder, i had my buddy bump the motor with the starter while i held my had over the spark plug hole i got it to blow oncebut it was very light compression now when every i try it i barly get any compression. im lost because the previous owner spraypainted the motor blue and sprayed over the timing marks i tried using a wire brush but it just marks up the little tag i need help bad

Put some more paint on the number area, and then take fine sandpaper and run over it. This will leave the darker paint in the stamped areas and make it easier to see.

i worked on the old ford tonight and guess what not a single mark on the balencer or small tab i was able to finally get the truck running smoked a good bit but its alive man what a feeling to know u can tear something down wth ur own 2 hands and put it back together and hear it run here are some things done to it valve job bored twenty over,and ditched the factory 2v 2barrel for a 4v 4 barrel with a holley 650 double pumper. i still have to replace the fuel pump and a new cap then i can dial inthe toming thanks for all the help
