I have another newbie question :)

Actually I have 2.

#1 If the #1 and #4 cylinders are 90 degrees out, does it matter if the ummm stroke is at TDC to determine if it's a 352/390?

#2 What if you can't find TDC? There are no marks on the crank pulley, nor the 'arm'? that the pulley is attached to I've looked and looked, even turned to motor over by hand and couldn't find any indication of TDC Don't have the engine in running condition at this point, so can't use a timing light

i wouldnt think it matter at all, the stroke is the same everytime it goes up and down no matter if it at tdc or not. just pull the dizzy cap out to get it close as you can to number 1, then put a hose down in the hole and watch it as you slowly turn it over, you will see when it at the top of the stroke, then mark the hose and rotate til it stops all the way at the bottem, there you go...

The marks will be located on the balancer that the pully is attached to. They are either covered in grease or paint...The timing marks on the balancer relate to a tab on your timing chain cover on the passenger side of the motor under the water pump. You can pull the dizzy cap and rotate the motor until the rotor is under where the number one plug wire would be located, then check your dampner to see if you can find the marks. In order to verify stroke, you will need one cylinder and top and one at bottom, anything else will make your marks too close together.

Well there must be a lot of paint on it...because it's completely smooth to the touch I didn't know about removing the cap trick. I'll go that route and come back with the results

you will never be able to time your engine if you do not find those timing marks.
