I decided to time my 86 300 I6 today and found that the timing is almost perfect on cylinder #2....
I know I am not drunk nor have I had any medications that would cause me to confuse the 1st and 2nd cylinders but when I try to locate the timing mark with the light when connected to number 1 its on the bottom of the engine.
Being of a logical nature I can only assume that the d-key was not installed by whomever had the truck before me or the balancer is slipping and I need a new one.
I have not replaced one before nor seen one go out. How can you tell?
You can remove the spark plug on #1 cylinder and feeling for pressure [compression stroke], make sure the piston is at the top of the stroke. Then, look at the distributor rotor and see if it is pointing to the terminal for the #1 cylinder.
She's got good compression and runs like a top. Just cant time the engine by light if I do that she stops running all together.
I can time by ear and find the sweet spot and everything is good but I am afraid I might be running a little off. Guess I should just replace the old one anyway. Looks original.
Like 1986F150six said, pull your #1 spark plug, find top dead center, and check where your dizzy rotor is pointing. If it isn't pointing at #1, then adjust it so that it is.
If it is pointing to #1 but the timing mark isn't in the right place, then your harmonic balancer may have slipped and be in need of replacement.
Cool, Will do. I like your build in your sig there. all the parts Im going for as well. But no cam yet?
No cam yet, but I am running the chevy 250 rockers. I should add that to my sig! But really, that combo is incredible. There are other things you can do - ported and polished head, even a 240 head, but I like this setup just fine.
