Ok so i got the motor back together and figured out why it was smoking my friend put the plug wires on wrong so i put the distributor back in and when i try and start it, it will turn over and if i try and pump the gas to get it going it will backfire and the carb even started on fire a couple times i dont know what it what are your suggections i have a feeling it might be the timing but i am not sure? How can i tell what it is?
Pull the #1 spark plug and make sure it's coming up on the compression stroke by turning it over with your finger in the spark plug hole. Then line up your timing marks and reset the dizzy.
I learned a little trick to setting to timming on a new engine.
Find TDC on the compression stroke by turning the engine until the timming marks are aligned, then remove the valve cover and check if the valves are up.
Move the timming mark to where you want it to be (6 to 10 is usually a good starting point)
Install the dist so that the rotor points to #1 and install a timming light.
Turn the key switch to on (run not start)
Rotate the dist back and forth by hand until the timming light fires, when it fires, stop and tighen up the dist.
OK i got it Runing today and ran it for the 30 minute break in period, i set the idle for 2200 and looked through and the number 4 header pipe was glowing hot i dont know what it is, any suggestions would be nice?
