I have seen a number of posts on the IAC valve and how it affects idle, but many of those have been about low idle.
I have a 1999 Ranger XLT 4 cyl Manual with 35K miles.
When I am shifting out of gear, generally 2nd and 3rd, and do not have my foot on the accelerator, the engine does not 'idle down'. Occasionally it will even rev up a little bit. It only does these things occasionally.
A mechanic told me that I need to go to a dealer to have the computer flashed, but I read here a bit and found some info on the IAC valve. Is it possible that the IAC is causing my truck to stick in high idle? If not, what are some other possibilities? If so, I will clean it using the info in other posts.
Are you sure it's an idle problem? It sounds maybe like the throttle is sticking occasionally when you take your foot off the gas pedal. I would first check to make sure the floor mat isn't preventing the pedal from going all the way back up when you release it. And you should consider a possible bind in the accelerator cable and/or throttle control mechanisim.
The revving and high idle (throttle?) only occurs when the clutch is depressed or the car is in neutral. If I shift out of gear, or depress the clutch while in gear, the problem occurs (even revs up more). Once I let the clutch out into gear, the problem stops. If I let the clutch out into Neutral, the problem still occurs.
Ken00...thanks for the TSB. My concern is as follows:
I have called two Ford dealers in the area here (Atlanta), and both have told me that there would be a $78 fee to assess the situation, and then fees from there for implementing the TSB, flashing the computer and the like. Funds are very tight these days.
Are there any simple fixes I can try, so that, in the event that I do go to the dealer, I know that I have exhausted all of my options?
Based on the TSB the problem is caused by a bad electrical conection at the TPS and it only takes 1/2 a hour to do, have you considered get the kit and doing the work yourself.
Sure. My mechanic also mentioned a TSB that was numbered 98-26-8, that also mentioned some dash indicator light stuff that I have yet to see (shouldn't they illumniate at startup?).
So I guess I should go for the kit ($$?), see if that helps and if not, try having the computer flashed?
Your mechanic is correct, I missed that one. It does call for PCM reprograming but for trucks with a PCM calibration of one of these numbers 8-49A-R06, 8-49B-R10, 8-49S-R10, 8-49T-R06, 9B1M-AA-A, 9B1M-AB-A, 9B1M-AC-A, 9B1M-BA-B, 9B1M-BB-B.
I don't think resetting the PCM will help but then again it's free so it can't hurt.
I think a dealer is the only place to get the kit.
Went by the dealer to order the kit a couple of days ago. That same day, the 'idle' problem acted up really bad. When I engaged the clutch, the engine would rev up so high that I was tempted to turn the truck off for fear of frying the engine. The guy at the dealer said that the kit would not solve that problem, and that I needed to bring the truck in to have it looked at. He said that the kit would not solve the high 'idle', as the bad wiring connection prohibited the pulse to the IAC valve, and that would cause the engine to idle low, not rev up high.
I'm really trying to avoid just gicing in to the tchs at the dealer, as they seem so shady. Anywhere else I can turn?
It would appear that both TSBs 98-26-8 and 00-3-5 apply to your truck. Both TSBs talk about the same problem you are having so i would do them.
If you dont like the dealer that told you it wouldnt make any difference is there another one close by?
i am having a similar problem with my 2000 ranger, 3.0 auto, this is an intermitent problem. sometimes when i come to a stop the engine does not idle down and i will really have to get on the brake to stop. i would like to see the tsb if it applies to this model.
ken i will will send you my email address.
