Your profile says 1964 F100, so I assume this is the truck you're asking these questions about, but for what reasons do you need to ID either?

The 223 I-6 was basically the same 1961/64 F100/600. 1963/64 F100/250's came standard equipment with the Ford 3.03 3 speed manual all syncromesh transmission.

3 speed Warner T-86 overdrive was optional in 1961/64 F100's.

Number I just want to make sure it is the 223, Because the guy told me his father had some major work done to the motor some years back. I dont even know if its a 223 but I think so. Thanks David Mack

The 4th digit of the VIN is the engine code:

J = 223 I-6 / B = 262 I-6, which was an option for 1961/64's.

But, who knows after 48 years have passed by, what engine is present today?

Both the 223 & 262 look identical, share many of the same parts, so the only true way to tell one from the other is by measuring the stroke.

Stroke: 223 = 3.60" / 262 = 4.03"

I assumed that's what you were referring to when you asked what side the manifolds were on.

Everyone else considers it the drivers side, except for peeps that live in countries where they drive on the wrong side of the road.

Examples: Australia, Japan, India, Indonesia, South Africa, New Zealand, UK

Pull number one spark plug and measure the stroke with a wooden dowel by turning the engine over by hand one full rev.
