Your profile says 1964 F100, so I assume this is the truck you're asking these questions about, but for what reasons do you need to ID either?
The 223 I-6 was basically the same 1961/64 F100/600. 1963/64 F100/250's came standard equipment with the Ford 3.03 3 speed manual all syncromesh transmission.
3 speed Warner T-86 overdrive was optional in 1961/64 F100's.
Number I just want to make sure it is the 223, Because the guy told me his father had some major work done to the motor some years back. I dont even know if its a 223 but I think so. Thanks David Mack

The 4th digit of the VIN is the engine code:
J = 223 I-6 / B = 262 I-6, which was an option for 1961/64's.
But, who knows after 48 years have passed by, what engine is present today?
Both the 223 & 262 look identical, share many of the same parts, so the only true way to tell one from the other is by measuring the stroke.
