If it's a 4 speed automatic then it's an "AOD".
Stick you head under the rear bumper and look at the big center part of the rear axle. If the center part has a cover that's bolted on all around, then it's an "8.8 inch". If what you see has no circle of bolts and is just a rounded bulge then it's a "9 inch".
If you see a metal ribbon tag hanging on one of those bolts (you'll have look at the fronside of the axle if it's a 9") crawl under for a closer look. If it's readable, look at the second line, it will have numbers something like "3.L73 8.8 abc" (3.73 ratio limited slip 8.8") or "3.08 9abc" (plain 3.00 ratio 9"). The "abc" is just an example for the date code or whatever else is on there too.
Don't be surprised if the tag is missing or unreadable due to rust, the truck is 20 years old after all.
Ratios found in 83 F150's are :
2.47,2.75,3.00,3.25,3.50, and 4.11 for the 9 inch
and
2.47,2.73,3.08,3.55, and 4.10 for the 8.8's
