I am guessing you are talking about starting fluid you may have one of several problems, your batterys may not be putting out enough amperage, you could have air leaking into tour return lines, your glow plugs could be no good. If you have to crank it over a bunch to start it it is probably is the returnn lines, the excessive cranking can cause your starter to burn up so don't do it. Starting fluid coming into your engine on the intake stroke can hit your hot glow plugs and explode causing bent rods berrings damage to your pistons so if you absolutely have to use starting fluid disconect all of your glow plugs first or you might be looking for a new engine. The fuel return lines run between the injectors and they need to be replaced from time to time because as they wear out they start to leak air, they won't usuallt leak fuel though, when the truck is sitting over night those lines will leak air into you fuel injection system when you try to start the truck you will not get fuel to all 8 cylanders and it will usually spit out white smoke untill all of the air is purged then it will start. Replace your return lines FTE member typefour has kits that are better than anyone elses and are quite a bit cheeper than the napa kits. Try that.
