Hate to say told you so, but it didn't sound like a transmission problem to me. Right after I swapped my truck to 4wd, the driveshaft I had gotten from the junyard was dented (but looked fine). Going slow, no problems, but after 35 or so, it was imbalanced enough to vibrate pretty badly.
Its hard to tell from the picture, but that looks like a bunch of rust/corrosion and pitting on the u-joint cross. If it is, thats been slowly going over time and no way it would be result of a recent tranny issue. One other thing with driveshafts, if you tested it in gear, without the parking brake on, chances are the truck was loading the driveline, causing it to jam up a bit and feel secure. Its better to check them with the parking brake on, and truck in neutral, so it can actually wiggle around some. If you get what I mean.
i decided to drop the tranny anyway as it is time for a new clutch. The bad new is the bolts were so tight on the tranny mount that when i put my cheater bar on and gave all the pressure i could i broke the case of the tranny. It sheered the whole part off that the bolt screws into. i guess i will be using my spare tranny after all.
i did replace all the u-joints and the center support bearing as had some play in it also. all the other u-joints were in good shape and had lots of greese in them but i figured while i was at it i will just do all of them. Did the front drive line as well since of those were bad also. I also picked up a complete 4" lift made by superlift today for $250. It only has 4000 miles on it. Shocks and all, i thought it was a good deal.

I would venture a guess that the vibration from the driveshaft cracked your tailhousing and it was not from you torquing on the bolts.
