I just wanted to say that i am amazed at how strong this zf-5 is. Something is broke inside mine, happened last week while i was in ND. I just drove 600 miles at 70mph with the worst vibration and shaking one can imagine. I thought for sure the tranny was going to explode and come through the floor board. I could barley hold onto the shifter and my hands were asleep from the steering wheel vibration. I will be dropping it today or tomorrow and putting my extra one in with a new flywheel, pilot bearing(i think this is what went bad) and throw out bearing and fresh fluids. I know that it is not good to drive the truck like this for fear of damaging other parts but i had no other way home and for the tow bill i could have bought another truck so i chanced it and this time i think i won. I will also be swapping rear ends to 3.55 to hope improve my mileage
Not to say something isn't broken in the ZF5, but whats the transmission mount look like and is the driveshaft ok?
What was it like at idle?
Just thinking some of this info might be helpful to someone searching their own problem too.
I do agree the ZF5 is sturdy. I drove mine for several months with a large crack on the bellhousing. I think the crack was almost all the way up one side by the time I was able to swap it out.
the mounts look good. the drive shaft is good. all u-joints are new and still tight. the carrier bearing seems to be fine. When driving it is smooth first and second, then a slight vibration in third, forth is the worst so i was trying to skip that gear. at 70 mph was the least vibration(with 4:10 gears this is about 2400rpm.) when letting off the throttle to coast it would shake violently. when idleing there is no vibration. When i let the clutch out with no throttle just to roll forward you can feel something in there giving. I never have opened a tranny before but i think i will on this one just to check out what is really happening.
i don't think so. It runs perfect, idles great with no vibration has tons of power and does not leak a drop,(thanks to the new VC gaskets.) however it was a very long stressful drive. over half of it has no cell service and these days nobody will ever stop to offer a hand. If i did ruin the motor(99%sure i didn't) I will toss in my spare and keep on truckin.
Do you sill have the dual masss flywheel? It sounds like what happened to my 97 when the dual mass flywheel bit the big one. The center bearing in the flywheel crapped out and threw it out of balance, and ended up cracking the bell on the ZF.

might not be the tranny after all. this think felt so solid when i would grab the drive line and push it around, i could not believe when i took it off and found this
id expect that anyway though after 600 miles with a major trans problem.
sorry to burst the bubble lol.BUT wouldn't that be real nice! simply cheap fix.
had you only known, you could have pulled the rear shaft road side, locked the hubs in,tossed her in 4wd and driven smooth as silk as front wheel drive for the trip. or least the to a parts store and replace it lol.
but don't get too exited yet.that could just be some of the results from the real issue.
1) The bearing I was talking about is inside the transmission, yes.
2) You may be lucky and just need u-joints. Check the yokes and make sure they didn't get worn at all though. I would also strongly recommend replacing all of the rear driveline u-joints, if one is that worn all are probably pretty bad.
If that's all it is, then great, easy fix. As was mention however, it could be wear as a result of other damage. But try a new bearing and see.
Driveline problems are fun. I had one on my 2wd where the strap holding the joint to the output yoke loosened up enough for the u-joint cup to fly off, but the torque on the driveline while driving kept the cross from falling out of the other cup and flopping around..... until I slowed down and then it fell out and all h*ll broke loose lol.... And of course it was a 1330-1350 hybred u-joint so not stock, was about 8:30 PM and I was ~50 miles from home towing a trailer.... thankfully I found a kragen that had the joint right before they closed, but not a fun night for sure..
