I just got my first Ford diesel after several years of Cummins powered trucks. I was always under the impression that the 7.3 does not boost like my old trucks.
When I first got my gauges installed (0-30 psi) the highest boost I ever read was about 18 psi. This week I got my tunes from DP installed. Very happy with the tunes but I clearly observed higher boost settings.
I would like to know what range of boost is "relatively" safe for factory heads, head gaskets, and headbolts.
As an excursion owner my next upgrade is suspension springs. Then I was going to work in a few 7.3 things like aih delete, new intercooler boots, maybe the ccv and trying to stop the "dead heading" fuel problems.
Seems like 25lbs is about the threshold... won't do a whole lot more with your tunes anyways. Congrats on the truck! They're great trucks and will last awhile (324K and counting on mine).
Without a "boost fooler" to control the boost pressure seen by the MAP sensor the PCM will defuel at about 22-23 PSI of boost. That is to protect the stock turbo.
If you want to run more boost without defueling you can install a Riffraff OCR, or another type of "boost fooler". I recommend the OCR
