ok so I'm getting a whining noise when I turn my steering wheel in either direction,it's a whining type sound. Power steering pump has fluid but I did notice a slow leak on the the.... Not sure what it's called it's the pump thing that the steering shaft connects to. It sits on the driver side and connects to the frame directly under brake booster.
Anyways 1 can you tell me what the shat this pump thing is called
2 anyone had this problem previously if so what was the issue?
What year? A whining power steering system means there's air in the system. You have to decide if the air bubble is in the box, or the pump. When the pump goes bad, the veins in the pump wear down and then the pump "cavitates". That means the pump spins, but doesn't move fluid in a direction. It just swirls around pump shaft. This aerates the fluid. If you have a leak in the steering gear box, the box itself could develop an air bubble. It'll get worse and worse until it pukes all the fluid out and then it only steers right a little, but nothing to the left.
If you have a '78 or '79 1/2 ton, 4x4, check out my thread on how to bleed the system. It may seem long and unnecessarily involved, but I assure you, every bit of it HAS to be done in the order listed.
The truck I'm having steering issues with is a 74 F250 2wd
I will look into your link, how do I get this steering box leak fixed does Anyone sell rebuild kits for the box or will I have to replace the whole unit and pump?
Thanks
