Really Crete. I am new to trucking and towing these weights. I am asking the dumb questions to make sure my thinking is clear.

You do not need a DOT number if you are operating in INTRAstate commerce

I was under the impression that if your vehicle is commercial and over a certain weight you have to have one in KS and a few other states.

Washington is one of the states that now requires a federal DOT # for commercial vehicles Inter or Intra state. I imagine that due to the desire to make all Commercial laws uniform (Alaska & Hawaii have certain exeptions), one day all states will have that requirement.

In Arizona you need a DOT# if in commerce, with a vehicle with a GVWR over 18000, or a passenger vehicle, or Hazmat vehicle.

One should always use the standard disclaimer:

"Check your state and local laws."

Its very easy to do this because most states have weekly classes hosted by the local DOT to answer all the misconceptions that some may have.

In NC you would need a Class A CDL since your trailer weighs over 10k loaded. You would also have to have tags for 22k lbs. If you are commercial you will also need DOT numbers and a DOT inspection.
