The gasket on my WP started leaking so I removed it to replace it. Since I was that close to the timing chain I decide to replace it as well.... But I have broken two pullers thus far trying to get it off. Before you ask, yes, I have removed the the bolt
Im replacing the timing chain, pump, upper and lower hoses, heater hoses, thermostat and heater core but the darn balancer is fighting me. Any ideas?
Hit the balancer with a hammer, it always help loosing things up, get a stronger balancer puller. I had no issues when i did this in my truck i must say.
theres a washer also that dosnt come out with the bolt as i found out today make sure you remove that also and it should come right off with a pully puller. i ran into that problem today and once the washer was out the balancer came right off.
ive seen people go this deep, notice they have a double roller and then not change it.. I don't care if it looks brand new, change it. When I did mine it was like dropping a rebuilt motor in there, got a MAJOR performance boost.
I had a double roller in mine, but it had a lot of slack. Honestly though I havent noticed any difference in performance over the old one. Although I dont have my timing dialed in just yet. The indicator bent / twisted while I was tightening it and I didnt notice it til after everything was buttoned up. Im only off by a few degrees at most and its idling at about 600 rpm. I think I need to bump it up just a bit more. Either way she has new DR timing chain and gears, WP, and hoses. Now I found a dead spot in the starter so Ill replace that in a few days

You know how after you complete a project, you think back on everything you did? Well.... that washer was RTV'd to the crank snout and I didnt notice that it didnt come off when I pulled the bolt. I only noticed it after I had it towed 40 miles to my brothers garage cause it started snowing on me in my driveway. When I opened the hood, there it laid on its side in the balancer. It wiggled loose on the ride there.
yeah i ran into the same problem with the snow yesterday so i also had to have it towed to a garage but the one that i went to that they let you do your own work is only a mile away from my house.
Oh there was one huge benefit I noticed when I swapped out the timing set.... The knock went away. It sounded like octane ping that I was unable to adjust out with timing adjustments. But its gone now with the factory 10* BTDC setting (+/- a few degrees for the bent indicator)
Anyone ever swap out the timing chains for a set of timing gears in there bronco? I love the sound of gears thinking when i tear into it i may make the switch
Rotating your cam backwards would not make your motor happy with gears if you have a chain.
The close tolerances of the timing chain set is amazing to me for only about $50. All those links and sprockets could be just a little off and mess it up but, they are perfect. One can just barely install it because of the close tolerance.
