hello.. i have an 85 f-250 4x4 with a 6.9 and automatic transmission. it's been a great truck, until it comes time to start it after it's been sitting for a few hours. so after replacing the controller, glow plugs, and relay. then taking it to a local shop that found nothing wrong. i just happened to notice the batteries. there 2 years old with 750 cca. i've checked around and a replacement is rated at 810 cca. so it got me to thinking that could be the trouble. So, i was wondering if it's possible, that the batteries are just too underpowered
Sounds more like an air intrusion problem. If you have the water seperator canister on the firewall beside the drivers side inner fender then bypass it (just join the two fuel pipes together with a short length of rubber pipe and hose clamps).
You might also have to consider getting a fuel return line kit and replacing the fuel injector return lines.
describe your starting problem: slow cranking, cranks-starts-dies-PITA to restart, cranks great but takes forever to fire, etc.
as for the batteries, until a couple weeks ago my van had a good optima paired with a totally dead conventional battery, both between 800-850CCA. with only the one battery doing any work, the truck would still fire up, it just cranked slower.
There are many different kinds of air intrusion. The easiest kind to check for is backflow into the fuel filter. Whenever you remove the fuel filter, it should be brimful of diesel fuel. If not, you have air intrusion, and as soon as you crank your engine, that air on top of the filter will be pumped into your injection pump & make your engine stumble or die even if it runs for a few seconds while the fuel in the pump is used up. If you remove the filter & find it half empty, fill it up with clean diesel & try restarting, a full filter will often cure the problem until the next time you shut the engine down.
i noticed today i parked the ford facing down hill. it fired up just fine. would that pretty much tell me there is an air leak? i'll go out and pull the fuel filter to see what's in there?
