96 F350 crewcab broke down for the 3rd time in 2 months. All 3 times has happened when I am at work and go out to lunch. I start the truck and let it idle. After running for 5 - 15 minutes it will start running rough then it will die. If you give it fuel when it starts doing this it jerks and shakes like crazy then dies. The first time I replaced cps that was only 6 months old, still would not start. Replaced wiring warnesses on fuel injectors still no start. Finally had it towed to shop, they replaced glow plug relay and 1 battery. Ran fine for about 3 weeks then same thing happened. Changed fuel filter and had the other battery checked, it showed 100 % charge. Drained water fuel separator when changing filter. after trying to crank pulled filter cap off and no fuel in separator. Put a new fuel pump on, filled separator with fuel. Got it started and ran fine for about 1 1/2 weeks. Last night at lunch it did the same thing again. HPOP is full, engine oil is full. After all the time and money spent in last 2 months I obviously have not fixed the problem that is causing it to die on me. Truck only has about 110,000 miles. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appriciated.
Thanks
Is the amount of fuel in the tank low or at the same level each time? Does it only happen while setting still? If yes it could be the pickup in the tank.
I with mech on this, I would be looking at the fuel system. Another note here, I have never heard of just replacing one battery in a two battery setup, bad practice IMO. Then when they checked the other battery the last time you mentioned, they are going to see this battery the same as the new one. The two are wired together and the stronger newer one will share its strenght with the weaker and they will even off. The thing here is they even off at a much weaker level than two new batterys. I would sure watch that as well. I don't think this would be your problem with what is wrong right now, just that you want get the bang for your bucks spent on the one new battery.
Thanks for the replies, just got her back home. Looks like past money and time was wasted. First thing I did was pull filter cap and once again no Fuel in separator. Maybe check valve, or as you mentioned pickup in the tank? Yes, all 3 times fuel hand was about 1/4 tank. Try not to get that low on fuel but sometimes running behind with no time to stop. Any more help on which you think it would be would be appreciated. Thanks again.
P.S Now sounds like the release bearing is coming out.
your fuel tank sending unit could be faulty...sending a incorrect signal when the tank is actually empty. when it gets close to a 1/4 tank, fill the tank completly up and note the amount it takes and compare it to the capacity, this should help you determine if the sender is bad.
The gage on my 97 F350 is waaaay off. When I fiil up it goes beyond "F" by alot. When it gets between 1/2 & 1/4 it's empty. I just learn to live with it. I monitor the miles I drive by resetting trip Odometer at each fill up. Running unloaded I get aprox 18 mpg. With trailer on back it drops to aprox 10 mpg.
