After flushing the ATF out and refilling with P/S fluid, it worked like a new one. No matter what the manual says, right on the cap it says, "Use power steering fluid only".

P/S fluid ALWAYS works like it should. SOMETIMES, ATF doesn't work. That's good enough odds for me to just use P/S fluid.

Bottom line is, This is what I found works every time. If you find something else that works, great! With my truck, this is the ONLY thing that has worked. In the 8 months I was messing with my truck, I tried, straight 10W oil, ATF, P/S fluid and straight 30W oil. P/S fluid with this bleeding process was the only way I could get my truck to steer.
Thank you for your input. This is why I like this site so much, you get answers from people who have lots of experience with these trucks. I'm going to pull my steering box out today and get it cleaned up and ready for the new seals.

Alright finally got the new seal in my ps box. Installed it, bled it out exactly like you said and changed the fluid to power steering fluid. It works better than it did so I think your theory is right but it is still very loud and not to easy to turn. The previous owner was very hard on this truck so who knows what kind of punishment this pump has seen. Now I need a new pump so has anyone changed there's over to a different kind? If so were did you get it from? Any info would be great. Thanks

Ok finally got perfect power steering!!!!! Picked up a Saginaw bracket for a 351/400m from crazy horse. Got a rebuilt Saginaw for a 1979 e150 van from local parts store. Built a custom hose (1/2inverted flare x 5/8 inverted flare). A little messing around with belts, finally settled on a 13A1230 belt and man couldn't be any more impressed with the steering. One finger at an idle with 35" tire from lock to lock is no problem and you can't here the pump at all. Now I can really hear the exhaust leaks. LOL. On to the next thing... Love it
