Whinning power steering pump

hey all !

When offroading my relatively new F150, everytime my front end wacks some big bumps, my power steering pump starts whinning. It whines for 5 or 10 minutes and then stops. It's kind of embarrasing since my friends, some of which own chevy's, start busting on me and saying "oh, that's Ford for you, piece of junk power steering pump"

Anyone else experience this? Is my pump a piece of junk that can't handle a bunch of bumps?

Tom

The air won't kill the pump though, will it?

When I go muddin with my 91 i get somthing like that. I usually find a solid place stop, and turn the steering wheel from lock to lock a couple of times. It usually gets rid of the noise. Soon after that the pump went bad. Had it changed and that made a world of difference.

Can you recommend a high quality aftermarket pump for my 2003? I wouldn't even know where to look. It starts whinning very easily, only after a few good bumps. Is there any way to get the air bubbles from accumulating in the lines, perhaps overfilling the resevoir or something??

I'm not too familiar with steering pumps. I don't know if i'm mechanically inclined enough to "adapt" a chevy pump. Are you saying they're better pumps??

Well my pump was off a 86 T-bird. Check local junkyard. You can usually find parts like PS pumps and all sorts of fun stuff there. The junkyard in the town down the road knows me buy name now. Find a ranger only a few years younger than yours. I'm not sure if they really changed much.

IMHO, never crossbreed a ford and a chevy.
