New TV question

K. Watchin the super bowl on my 13" tube has me wantin a new tv. Thinkin bout a 40"-49" wall mount. Now those are all hd units. I just have regular cable tv. No box just a cable from the wall to the tv. I have channels 2-64. Well most of those anyway. Not lookin fer coolie ooo out doin the neighbors stuff. Just want a picture my tired old eyes kin see. And don't want to spend more than $400.

First question is do I need another box? Was at Wallie World an they had some 3?" on sale fer under $300 but had it hooked to a box. Not lookin fer a super duper gazillion pic. My eyes cain't tell the difference no ways. Just lookin for a big regular pic that I kin see. But ifin I need another box, ur the pic will be all funny lookin I need ta know. *** has HD service and a box but that cost money every month and will plain just out cost the tv in a year ur so. Really not lookin to up my cable plan

Second question. I've found 2 types. LCD and plasma, The plasma has higher contrast but lower p's. And the plasma has higher ratings. Now ratings kin be sqeued ta move stock by folks. So lookin for some real feed back on this. Walmart has this LCD unit with a built in HD tuner Find this full-HD Westinghouse 40" LCD HDTV at Walmart.com. Save money. Live better. And this plasma unit Sanyo 42" Plasma HDTV - Walmart.com

Thanks for any help on this.

If you are just running coax into your new TV there is absolutely no reason to get anything remotely expensive since you won't be using the technology anyways. Find the cheapest LCD TV (Plasmas burn out over time, cost higher, and are a dying technology) bring it home and plug it in. Simple as that. Shouldn't need a box as far as I know? At least we've never needed one and neither has anyone else.

Just be sure it DOES have a coax input, you would be surprised where the cheaper TV manufacturers cut out "extra" connections like to to save pennies

BTW, we bought our 32" LCD bedroom TV for $200 a couple black fridays ago. It's a name-brand (can't remember at the moment) and has been a great TV so far. We just have coax running into it since our second dish output isn't full HD and it looks fine.

I have both Plasma 42 inch, and LCD 32 inch. when we first got High Def TV from ***, we had boxes on both in order to have HD, but now, we only have it on the 32 LCD. The 42 Plasma, is older technology, I wanted to be the first person on the block to have one, but honestly, it doesn't have near as good of picture on HD as the LCD on HD.
However, on DVDs, and standard TV, they are nearly the same picture. With ***, the lower number channels are standard resolution, and the HD channels start at 2002 and go up from there.
I was under the impression that Plasma was an older technology, and on its way out, but they recently just started selling more of them in the stores, I wonder if they have changed them in some way.
Honestly.. in my opinion, LCD is the way to go. You chose the size according to your budget, but like Justin said, make sure it has a tuner. If not, some VCRs have built in tuners that you can use, however, VCRs are scarce, and hard to find, especially with tuners in them in case yours fails, then you will have to purchase a tuner, or rent a *** box.

LED TV's are awesome and have been dropping in prices really quick compared to what they were a year ago, can't wait for Black Friday this year to see how low they go. Daddy may have to go and upgrade the living room TV

I would think in Wichita you would also have access to several stations via digital broadcast in HD. With them you could have HD with just an antenae and no additional charge from ***. The down side would be switching from one source to another.

Well here you go Jack. Brand Name, big enough to see, Energy efficient, with in your stated budget, and far less likely to burn out on you or get a burned in image.

Newegg.com - Samsung 32" Class (31.5" Diag.) 720p 60Hz LED-LCD HDTV UN32D4003BD

The price in the cart was $359 and it has free shipping.

I can't say if it has coax as they don't mention it and even then I would think there are basic CoAx to HDMI converters at Radio Shack or Best Buy or of course somewhere online or Amazon.

I would print that out and take it to your preferred retailer so you can get a physical look at the TV and see if it is worth the money.

I went ahead and picked up the 32" Walmart had on sale on the isle for $248. That's smaller than I wanted and less than I was ready to spend. Pic looks good on the set up screen. 40% done and it so far has just locked in cbs, nbc, and abc as digital channels.
