I've never used one, but I think it would make some troubleshooting a little easier. You can still perform the same tests without it, it's just a little harder from what I understand.
I want to make one someday, it wouldn't be that hard. Those connectors are really easy to get (i think they're the same at the old printer cable connectors), and could use a breadboard.
I picked one up on e-bay this past Sunday fairly reasonably priced. It's made by Thexton and new they sell for about $693 and change. Got this on considerably cheaper than that. Just looking for any info or tips for when I use it.
