When should a Turbo be cleaned?

When should a Turbo be cleaned?
Is there a rule of thumb or a periodicity that the turbo should be cleaned under? Looking for a good interval, or signs indicating a cleaning is needed!

If you "work" the truck the turbo should stay clean. If you idle a lot or make short runs to the store then carbon can build up.

When you start getting "boost" codes, it's time to clean it.

my bad. the truck will usually throw codes. there is a test using a magnet on the vgt actuator to check for vein movement.

Here is a searchable list of codes if you don't have one. There are about half a dozen turbo codes. One is for underboost, I didn't see overboost.
