c-clips keep falling out

I recently installed a powertrax locker in my 1985 f150 8.8 and while I was taking it on a test drive after putting it in the axle slip out so I opened it up again and put everything back together and it was fine for about 2 days then today it fell out again I tore it open put it all back together and on my way back home it did it again so right now it is dead in the water so why are the c clips falling out? shouldn't they be help in place by the gears? are the c-clips different sizes and I got them switched? thanks ahead of time and if there already was a thread related to this great send me a link I couldn't find anything related.

I'll second this for info. I'm getting ready to do the clutch packs and spiders on my 8.8, so this issue interests me.

Any ideas?

Ya know, I was reading up on how the c-clips are held in place by the recess in the side gears, and the cross shaft supposed to not allow the axles to push in enough to expose the clips when all is together. So, I was wondering, have you called powertrax to see what they said about this? You might be missing a shim somewhere or something like that that they can help you with.

Thinking the same thing. On the stock carriers, open and L/S there are recesses. You take the center pin out, push the axle in and the C-clip comes out. When you reassemble you insert the C-clip, push the axle out and it stays.

Something doesn't sound right with either the install or the design of the powertrax.

The C-clips go in through the slots right? Then there's a check spring that goes in to keep the two halves apart. I think on the powertrax that's what retains the clips, opposite of normal.

Here's a good writeup on the install. How To Install A Powertrax Locker - Ford Truck Technical Articles

Maybe you could check your work. If you did everything right then I'd call Powertrax and see what they say. Maybe it's defective.

@F100 there was no check spring to keep it apart, I got the locker off craigslist it was already installed in a open carrier so I bolted on my ring gear and installed it.

I hope you setup the backlash and carrier preload on the "new" carrier or else the clips will be the last of the things you need to worry about.

There should be a large rod that goes down through the center of the powertrax, parallel to the ring gear, and it should have a small bolt holding it in place. If that part isnt there then it will allow that axles to walk inwards letting the c clips fall out.

Total parts list should be: 2x drive gears, 2x spacers, 4x springs, 4x pins, cross pin, and maybe 2x spacers that go inside of the larger spacers.

Is the carrier pin installed? That is the only thing that locates the axles to keep the c-clips from falling out. (third from bottom pic in instructions)

Did you go through the unit after you got it? I wouldn't trust things like that coming from craigslist until it was gone through and set up correctly.

From what I've heard, if the clearances are not perfect, the unit will not work.

If you have some machined they need to be to exact powertrax specs, if you can find them. I'm sure its proprietary design info and Eaton wont give that info out. I would personally just buy a new unit.
