I bought a used Detroit EZ Locker for the 8.8" rear axle on my '88 F150 and am having trouble putting it in. I was wondering if anyone could answer a couple of questions:
Does the locker need to be completely in the carrier before I put the carrier back in the diff case?
If so, how do I get the C-clips in after I slide the axle shaft into the locker?
Any info would be appreciated
Thanks,
Willie
I have the Powertrax No-Slip in my 84 F150 8.8, which I think is basically the same as you Detroit EZ locker. First off I did not have to remove the carrier from the diff case, and you shouldn't have needed to either. Once you in stall the outer plate that goes on the driver's side axle shaft you install the C-clip and push the axle shaft back into place. The plate on the passenger side should have a slot in it to which you can install the C-clip on the P.S. Did you get an instruction manual with your locker? I am willing to bet if you look on Detroit's website you might be able to find an exploded view of the assembly of your locker. Good luck!
Pkupman82,
Thanks for your reply. I already had the carrier out for re-gearing to 4.10. I found the slot in between the outer plate and the inner clutch of the locker, and C-clip fell right in!
Thanks again,
Willie
How difficult was it for you to swap the gears in? I am still sort of concidering swapping my 3.08s out for 3.55s. You will love that locker, I promise! I used to get stuck in the mud all the time (bald tires don't help much) because of those lousy UNlimited slip factory diffs. Heck now I can go places that I used to get stuck in in 4wd with only 2wd! I love those lockers!
Pkupman82,
Swapping gears wasn't too bad, the front D44 was kind of a pain because I had to put a new carrier in and then re-shim the carrier and pinion. Going from a 3.08 to 3.55 you would use the same carrier. The rear end was easier, everything set up perfect with original shims and Ford gears. Going from 3.55 to 4.10 I could barely tell the difference, if you do swap, you might even consider going up to 3.73.
Cheers!
I thought about 3.73s. But when I get back to the states (in Okinawa Japan now, USMC) I will be using the truck to drive from Michigan to North Carolina and I need some kind of mileage. Maybe I'll leave the 3.08s in until I am out of the service, or get another vehicle to commute with. No I will never sell the 84 she's my baby!
