I'm really stupid when it comes to suspension and axles and codes and all that stuff so sorry for asking the dumb question but when you talk about springs are you calling the front leafs "springs"?
Also would the tires also make you feel like the X wonders down the road? I know when I had new tires put on my F350 I felt a little wondering or sway but I dont know how much diff my X is with my F350.
yes, springs are referring to the leaf springs these trucks have.
ive been reading a ton and tires could definitely be apart of the wander too. the PO put on new tires (also did ball joints, tie rods, tie rod ends at the same time) and claimed the wander got worse. he went up to 285/75s. So before I do the V Code swap, I am going to mess with the air pressure and see if that helps. I am also going to pick up some 2* and 3* castor shims and see if that helps.
I am still going to throw on some Rancho Rs9000Xls just for the hell of it. The shocks on there now arent shot, but they look a bit tired. It certainly cant hurt.
if anyone can help with the missing part numbers, that would be much appreciated.
Yep...that brings up a good point. I am running 15 psi higher than the day I bought it, so that could factor in to solving my particular wander issue. Running 60 psi vs. The 45 psi that were in them when i bought it. My tires are E rated, by the way.
I have a buddy at work who is an amazing mechanic/big truck/diesel expert and he looked at my truck and though that I had zero caster (possibly even negative!). So today I picked up 3 degree caster shims from the local spring shop. Together we dropped the axle and threw the shims on (took about an hour tops). Cost me 27 bux.
It was instantly a huge improvement!!!!! The truck tracks soooo much straighter and what little slop I felt in the steering wheel was gone. It did not correct the issue 100%, but it is barely there now. I can drive one-handed down the road no problem. All this means to me is that I am on the right track. I need get an exact measurement of what my caster is now and determine how much more I can increase it. I'm thinking a 4 degree shim might do the trick. However,I might just take the beast into a legit big truck spring/wheel alignment shop and let them nail it down.
I also discovered that the PO installed D rated tires and the psi was different in each one. He was running 57 FD, 61 FP, 55 RD, 52 RP. It was pouring rain out here on Long Island today, so I didn't mess with the air pressure..but I bet this will also help.
The deep pan won't do squat regarding cooling according to some tranny experts on this forum, you just added another 3.5 qts of unnecessary fluid a much bigger trans cooler would of worked better.
I never installed a temp gauge on it until after the transmission died at 255k. After replacing it, I put the temp gauge on with the 6.0 cooler. I did NOT put the Derale pan back on the new transmission since I installed the 6.0 cooler. It is now sitting in my garage collecting dust, as my temps rarely get over 150* now.
I did paint the front frame rails black after knocking off the rust, and the tow hooks are back on again. Thanks for the compliments. I painted the grill and emblem myself, and it wasn't too much work. I have another emblem if someone out there wants a 9" Ford emblem painted to match their truck on an 05-07 grill.
