As well as having greater surface area for cooling, cores with extra rows of tubes have the advantage of more cooling time.

The water pump is still shifting the same gallons/hour, but if that volume is passing through twice the number of tubes, it's in the core (being cooled) for double the time.

Considering Ford used a 2 row in the 460 engined trucks it should work fine. I have a Modine in mine, I don't know what will happen when it goes bad, it has a lifetime warranty.

Why would the fan shroud have to be changed?

Different depth. It mounts to the core, which is thicker.

The stock one I have for standard cooling is pretty large, but it appears that it could be spaced out another inch or so past the 1" radiator without hitting anything. It mounts to the top of the radiator on a thin lip that sticks up off the core. Looking at pictures, it looks as if the standard cooling fan shroud I have has the mounting holes spaced further apart than the super cooling fan shroud.

Is there a reason why I couldn't drill holes in the new radiator to fit my current fan shroud?

It's not the holes that are the issue, the shroud "funnel" itself is deeper on the 1r to keep the opening around the fan the in same spot. The 2r shroud "funnel" is shorter. Some people have also had issues clearing the belt driven accesories clearing the 1r shroud when bolted up to a 2r radiator.

Thank you for the good advice, Archion.

I went with the 2-row Super Cooling Spectra radiator, and it looks great and fits perfectly in my truck. All the necessary hardware was included, making this a nice, easy upgrade. I went ahead and bought a new fan shroud for the Ford dealer to fit the thicker radiator as well. And you are right, it is shorter to accept the thicker radiator.

One question though. The radiator came with a set of four large zinc-colored metal clips. I can't figure out where these go. Do you have any ideas?

Lariat, you probably got a bonus. They sound like the ones for the bottom of the shroud. Archion can probably say for certain.
